Sony's Latest Square Sensors: Speed and Innovation in a Compact Package!
Imagine capturing incredibly detailed images at lightning-fast speeds. That's the promise of Sony's new series of global shutter image sensors. Building on the groundbreaking 105-megapixel IMX927 sensor, these new additions, the IMX928 and IMX929, offer impressive performance in smaller, square formats.
The IMX928 boasts a 68.16-megapixel resolution within a 22.5 x 22.5-millimeter square sensor. This is almost as tall as a full-frame sensor but notably narrower. The IMX929 takes it a step further, packing 50.79 megapixels into a compact 19.9 x 19.9-millimeter square.
But here's where it gets interesting: speed. The original IMX927 can capture 12-bit photos at 73 frames per second (fps). The new sensors? Even faster! The IMX928 hits 90 fps, and the IMX929 blazes at an impressive 136 fps. This enhanced speed is achieved through optimized sensor drive and improved A/D converters, leading to more efficient processing.
Sony is targeting these sensors toward industrial applications like factory automation, 3D inspection, and flaw detection in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing.
And this is the part most people miss: Sony's industrial innovations often trickle down to consumer products. The new sensors feature a novel ceramic package, allowing for more flexible camera designs.
