The frigid temperatures in Jashore are making headlines, as the district has recorded the lowest temperatures in the country for two days running. On December 27, the thermometer dipped to a chilling 8.8 degrees Celsius, which is even lower than the previous day's reading of 9 degrees Celsius, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
A cold front sweeping down from the north has intensified this wintry blast, posing challenges not just for residents, but also for animals in the area. The BMD categorizes cold waves based on temperature ranges: mild cold waves occur between 8.1 and 10 degrees Celsius, moderate waves range from 6.1 to 8 degrees Celsius, severe waves span from 4.1 to 6 degrees Celsius, and very severe waves are classified as anything below 4 degrees Celsius.
Presently, Jashore, alongside other districts such as Chuadanga, Gopalganj, Rajshahi, Pabna, Sirajganj, and Nilphamari, is experiencing mild cold wave conditions. However, there is some hope on the horizon, as temperatures might see a slight rise in the coming days. Yet, the persistent fog exacerbates the sensation of cold, making it feel even more biting.
Daily life has been significantly impacted as residents wrap themselves in winter jackets and scarves, with many choosing to stay indoors. Unfortunately, for those who rely on daily wages, such a choice is not feasible.
Along the banks of Laldighi in Jashore city, hundreds of laborers gather each day in search of work, undeterred by the harsh weather. However, the numbers seeking employment have decreased by nearly half due to the extreme cold. Sujan Mia, a worker from Bahadurpur, lamented, "There has been no work for the past week. Even arriving early in the morning does not help."
Construction worker Md Minhaj echoed this sentiment, stating, "It’s incredibly difficult to be outside during the winter, but I have no option. I must come out to find work."
Similarly, rickshaw puller Hanef Ali observed a dramatic drop in passengers, noting, "Very few people venture out in this cold. My earnings have plummeted, and I am struggling to get by each day."
The cold wave has contributed to an increase in winter-related ailments, including fevers, coughs, sneezing, and gastrointestinal issues. In light of these health concerns, doctors are urging locals to stay hydrated with warm liquids, dress warmly, and take necessary precautions to maintain their health during this frigid spell.
